  • Tony Cayson

Tony Cayson was born August 15, 1969. In on high school, whether at quarterback, tailback or patrolling the outfield, the fleet-footed athlete turned heads. Cayson had recruiters frothing for his services. Even after torn knee ligaments suffered in the state playoffs against Emmitt Smith's Pensacola Escambia team slowed him a step, the offers rolled in. Cayson had scholarship offers from Miami and UF, among others, but only Clemson gave him the nod to play quarterback. Three weeks before he was supposed to report to the South Carolina campus, the Seattle Mariners snatched him up in the MLB draft, two picks ahead of current big leaguer Brett Boone. A couple seasons spent rooming and playing alongside Ken Griffey, Jr. in "A" ball, Cayson, who couldn't return to a Division I program after turning pro, settled in at NAIA Carson-Newman (Tenn.) to get in his four years on the football field and acquire his degree.
